ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Norman finally became Norma! You’ve known this would happen since the show premiered, but how did you feel when you learned it was actually happening here, now, in season three?
FREDDIE HIGHMORE: Excitement! I think that’s what everyone’s feeling was in reading episode six in general. There’s so much brilliant material for everybody — the writing, Kerry [Ehrin] just did such a marvelous job on this. Vera had so many tricky, emotionally challenging scenes, and as you see, she just plays them brilliantly, as did everyone else. I think it wasn’t purely this sense of what a brilliant scene I get to do, but how amazing the episode is in its entirety and how it’s just this string of scene after scene that lands with such a blow and pushes the story forward so much.

What does this mean for Norman moving forward?
I think it’s the beginning of the end. I’ve always seen season 3 as the real turning point where, by the end of it, Norman is much closer to the Norman Bates of Psycho than to the Norman that we set up at the beginning of Bates Motel. I think this episode is potentially pivotal in showing us how Norman will start to live much more in fiction as opposed to reality. Whether that’s good or bad… I mean, he’s quite happy to wander around the kitchen and pop blackberries into his mouth. But he’s very much living in his fantasy world, and similarly in the basement where he imagines his taxidermy coming to life. More than anything, it’s the start of that [fantasy] for Norman.

Did something specifically spark this moment for Norman? The inciting incident seems to be Norma storming out, but the seeds were of course planted earlier.
The nice thing is, we always knew it was going to come, so that’s what makes it even harder to watch. Because you’re like, oh, it’s finally happening! Norman has always had these visions of Norma, yes, but at the same time, he has moments where he does feel that he is her. He hasn’t quite gone to the extent of dressing up as her in the past, but think about the second season, when Caleb was in the motel room, and Norman felt Norma’s flashbacks, and scratched this imaginary scar on his leg, and was accusing Caleb of doing things as if he were Norma. So we’ve seen that side of Norman before. I think what makes this scene so interesting and more hard-hitting is the fact that Norman’s just so cheery about the whole thing.

Is that unlike how you envisioned the scene in your head?
That’s what’s brilliant about the writing from Kerry, who wrote this episode. It’s so fantastic because instead of it coming from anger or angst or a big fight in which he slips into this Norma character, the fact that it can be so understated and happy makes it even sort of worse to watch. And even creepier, really, that in this turbulent episode, Norman has actually found his real moment of happiness when he is Norma. And Max [Thieriot]’s expression is of course priceless. You can play the scene so much just off of what he’s looking at and what he’s thinking and how he’s reacting to it. That’s a testament to how great he is as well.

You’ve had input into Norman and Norma developments in the past, like the kiss in the season two finale. Did you have any input into this scene?
To some extent. I think it was always a plan of theirs, as it would have been from anyone who’s seen Psycho. You know that Norman is going to have this moment at some stage in Bates Motel. But there was a day just before we started shooting when I went into the costume fitting with Monique [Prudhomme], the costume designer, and there, alongside all of my clothes of the season, were all of Norma’s dresses and robes. Monique and I were like, oh, let’s just try a few of them on. We ended up taking a few photos of me in a few of Norma’s garments and sending them off to Kerry and Carlton [Cuse] in LA. So we like to think that that further hastened the fact that they could finally see me in those clothes and say, yeah, let’s just go ahead and do it! [laughs]

This was such a monumental moment for fans. Did you treat it as such, or did you try not to make a big deal of it?
I guess there was more preparation that went into it, given the novelty of it, and the fact that something like it had never been done before on Bates Motel. You want to make it right, and you have to find that new character of Norman completely believing that he is Norma.

So you consider this Norman-as-Norma a new character in itself?
It’s very much this mix of how Norman saw his mother almost every single day bustle around the kitchen making breakfast. What would Norman have taken away from that experience every day, throughout his life? It isn’t necessarily a mimicking of Norma, but of Norman’s version of her that he holds in his mind.

I want to say something about blackberries. Norman, as Norma, says he bought fresh blackberries the day before, and Dylan finds the berries in the refrigerator. He holds them — they exist! And so I’m wondering if there’s any chance here of Norman already having gone outside of the house thinking he is Norma, to purchase berries, or if he’s burglarizing Norma’s memories, like when he experienced her flashbacks about Caleb.
I think that you’re right! The question is, how much of what Norman is imagining really takes place? And in the basement, when Norman puts his head down on the table next to the pigeon who is very much dead, and Juno the dog is next to them, and then you cut back to him, and he’s just staring straight into space… you wonder whether all of what we’ve just seen has merely taken place in Norman’s head and if he’s been staring ahead in his basement the whole time. You wonder whether what he has enacted in the kitchen takes place in his head. I think there is that suggestion, as you say, that there’s more to what you actually see taking place. I guess you just have to decide how mad you think he is.

Entertainment Weekly: Norman est finalement devenu Norma! Vous saviez que cela arriverait depuis la création de la série, mais qu'avez-vous ressenti quand vous avez appris que ça allait se passer réellement maintenant, dans la saison trois?

Freddie Highmore: De l'excitation! Je pense que c'est le sentiment  que de tout le monde a eu en lisant l'épisode six en général. Il y a tellement de matière brillante pour tout le monde - l'écriture, Kerry [Ehrin] a juste fait un travail merveilleux à ce sujet. Vera avait tant de scènes délicates, difficiles émotionnellement, et comme vous le voyez, elle les joue juste avec brio, comme tout le monde. Je pense que ce n' était pas purement qu'une scène brillante que j'ai du faire, mais l'épisode l'est dans son intégralité et il est juste cet enchainement de scène après scène qui atterrit sur un tel coup et pousse l'histoire en avant .

Est-ce que cela signifie pour Norman aller de l'avant?

Je pense que c'est le début de la fin. J'ai toujours vu la saison 3 comme le véritable tournant où, à la fin de celle-ci, Norman est beaucoup plus proche du Norman Bates de Psycho que du Norman que nous mettons en place au début de Bates Motel. Je pense que cet épisode est potentiellement le  pivot de comment Norman va commencer à vivre beaucoup plus dans la fiction, par opposition à la réalité. Que ce soit bonne ou mauvaise ... Je veux dire, il est très heureux de se promener dans la cuisine. Mais il vit très bien dans son monde imaginaire, et de même dans le sous-sol où il imagine que sa taxidermie revient à la vie. Plus que tout, c' est le début de ce ça  [l'imaginaire] pour Norman.

Est ce que quelque chose a provoqué spécifiquement ce moment pour Norman? L'incident semble être le départ de Norma, mais les graines ont été bien sûr plantées plus tôt.

La bonne chose c'est, que nous savions depuis toujours ce  qu'il allait arriver, de sorte que ça rend encore plus difficile à regarder. Parce que vous êtes comme, oh, c'est enfin arrivé! Norman a toujours eu ces visions de Norma, oui, mais dans le même temps, il a des moments où il se sentait elle. Il n'a pas tout à fait disparu dans la mesure où il ne s'habillait pas comme elle dans le passé, mais pensez à la deuxième saison, quand Caleb était dans la chambre du motel, et où Norman a senti les flashbacks de Norma, et s'est fait cette cicatrice imaginaire sur sa jambe, et qu'il avait accusé Caleb de faire ces choses comme s'il était Norma. Donc, nous avons vu ce côté de Norman avant. Je pense que ce qui rend cette scène si intéressante et plus percutante est le fait que Norman est si joyeux .

Est-ce que c'était différent de la façon dont vous aviez envisagé la scène dans votre tête?

Voilà ce qui est génial à propos de l'écriture de Kerry, qui a écrit cet épisode. Il est tellement fantastique, car au lieu d'en venir à la colère ou l'angoisse ou un grand combat dans lequel il se glisse dans ce personnage de Norma, il est si sobre et heureux ,que ça le rend encore pire à regarder. Et même plus effrayant, vraiment, que dans cet épisode turbulent, Norman a effectivement trouvé son vrai moment de bonheur quand il est Norma. Et Max [Thieriot] son expression est bien sûr une valeur inestimable. Vous pouvez jouer la scène tellement juste à côté et voir ce qu'il pense ,comment il y réagir. Voilà un témoignage de la façon dont il est génial aussi.

Vous avez agit dans l'évolution de Norman et Norma dans le passé, comme pour le baiser dans le final de la saison deux. Avez-vous eu un mot à dire sur cette scène?

Dans une certaine mesure. Je pense que ça a toujours été un de leur plan, comme toute personne qui a vu Psycho. Vous savez que Norman va avoir ce moment à un certain stade dans Bates Motel. Mais il y avait un plan juste avant le début du tournage quand je suis allé au raccord costume avec Monique [Prudhomme], la costumière, et là, aux côtés de tous mes vêtements de la saison, nous avions des robes et des peignoirs de Norma. Monique et moi étions comme, oh, disons simplement qu'on va en essayer quelques-uns . Nous avons fini par prendre quelques photos de moi dans quelques-uns des vêtements de Norma et on les a envoyé à Kerry et Carlton [Cuse] à Los Angeles. Donc, nous aimons  penser que d'autres étaient impatients sur le fait qu'ils pourraient enfin me voir dans ces vêtements et dire, oui, nous allons juste aller de l'avant et le faire! [rires]

Ce fut un moment monumental pour les fans. L'avez vous traité comme tel, ou avez-vous essayé de ne pas en faire une grosse affaire ?

Je suppose qu'il y avait plus de préparation , compte tenu de la nouveauté , et le fait que quelque chose comme ça n'avait jamais été fait avant dans Bates Motel. Vous voulez faire les choses, et vous devez trouver ce nouveau personnage de Norman qui pense qu'il est Norma.

Donc, vous considérez Norman-Norma comme un nouveau personnage en lui-même?

Il est ce mélange de la façon dont Norman a vu sa mère presque tous les jours dans la cuisine préparer le petit déjeuner. Qu'est ce que Norman a retenu de cette expérience tous les jours, tout au long de sa vie? ce n' est pas nécessairement une imitation de Norma, mais une version d'elle qu'il a dans son esprit.

Je veux dire quelque chose à propos des mûres. Norman, cen tant que Norma, dit qu'il a acheté des mûres fraîches le jour d'avant, et Dylan trouve les mûres dans le réfrigérateur. Il les tient - elles existent! Et donc je me demande s'il n'y a aucune chance pour que Norman ait disparu en dehors de la maison, en tant que Norma,et qu'il ait achèté des mûres, ou est ce qu'il "vole"  les souvenirs de Norma, comme quand il a eu ses flashbacks de Caleb.

Je pense que vous avez raison! La question est, où est ce que l'imagination de Norman commence? Et dans le sous-sol, où Norman met sa tête sur la table à côté du pigeon; qui est bien mort, et Junon le chien est à côté d'eux, et après il regarde droit dans le vide... vous vous demandez si tout ce que nous venons de voir a simplement eu lieu dans la tête de Norman et s'il regardait juste dans le vide tout ce temps. Vous vous demandez si ce qu'il a adopté dans la cuisine a lieu dans sa tête. Je pense qu'il y a cette suggestion, comme vous le dites, il y a plus à ce que vous voyez réellement . Je suppose que vous avez juste à décider à quel point il est fou.
